Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon - 2006
-- a nice event. Pretty course, gently rollling from the rural farm areas back
into Milwaukee and Lake Michigan. Temperatures were in the 50-60 range --
plenty of sun and not much wind. A bit warmer than one would want for a PR
attempt, but none-the-less a great day.
Jim Bahr, ran the event for the 26th time, running a 3:32 and winning the 60-64
AG. Others there: John Becerril from the office ran a great first marathon with
a 3:23. Scott from the Naperville Running Company ran a 3:06 as a training run
for the upcoming Chicago Lakefront 50/50. Cara Drexler from the Fox River Trail
Runners had a tough day, but still placed ahead of mid pack. Steve Boots had an
excellent run (3:21). I think Ben (NCCTC) finished his second of 5 consecutive
marathon weekends.
Since they gave a Grandmaster award, my time was good for the 5th AG award
(141st out of 1908 overall). I occasionally felt a few creaks, but overall it
was a beautiful day. The primary intent of this race for me was to tune up for
a 50K PR attempt in 6 weeks (at the Chicago Lakefront 50/50), but I though if I
broke 3:20 I'd probably be in age group hardware, so I put down a few hard
miles towards the end. Towards the end I was running hard and was a bit into
the land of discomfort -- but, at the same time I was so grateful to be healthy
and running hard -- I almost wanted that last 3-4 miles to last a bit longer, as
I approached the view of Lake Michigan near the end. After a fast mile 24, I
actually slowed a bit in mile 25 before picking it up again in mile 26. The
breeze off of the Lake felt good, and the sun was gorgeous. But, at mile 26 it
was time to take it on home. This as a 99% effort -- a bit faster might've been
possible, but not much, and not without risk. This was a hard race effort, but
also a conservative and safe one.
Now, it's time to figure out how to recover, get in a final training phase, and
taper for the 50K on Saturday 11 Nov 2006 (6 weeks out).
Here are the details, along with a comparison last year's run, which was a
training run 4 weeks in advance of the 50 miler. By way of comparison, my HR
for the more difficult Boston course this past Spring (3:18:59) was in the
151-155 range for most of the race. This was my first marathon where all of the
miles were at a 7:XX pace (no sub 7 miles, no miles at 8 or slower).
